this got like 4 times longer than I anticipated, I’m really sorry orz It’s basic beginning stuff I guess, stuff that you must have seen everywhere already but I can’t begin to tell you how important it is, at least to me, to know what the hell that mass you’re drawing is. Even if I’m not the best at it (and even if I could use some anatomy studying lately coughcough), it’s something I’m PASSIONATE about and something I consider you have to do, to learn and absorb in order to draw people and be happy with it. Because in my case, once I kinda sorta got the hang of drawing bodies, I felt my hand free, relaxed. I felt happy as hell with what I started being able to draw and I enjoyed drawing bodies 210%
Have two sketchbooks: One for finished and high-quality art (stuff made with Prismacolor or Copic if you use that or art for your portfolio) and the other sketchbook for more messy doodles. This way you have a place to try new things and mess up as much as you need. When I only had one sketchbook I was scared to draw in it because I didn't want to mess it up
Do studies. I cant tell you how much I've improved just by doing studies of shoes, hands, noses, and all that. This works for when you have art block too since you’re not really making stuff up and just learning how real things work.
Learn from others. I’ve never taken a real art class because 1. I can’t afford it and 2. there’s no good art classes/programs at my school. I’ve been following several artists and learning from them over the years and they’ve helped me tremendously. Just please do not steal art because that is never okay.
Break down concepts. If you notice there’s something wrong with your piece then figure out why. You can’t get better if you leave mistakes and don't try to understand whats going on. If the color is weird figure out if the values look right or maybe its the saturation of the color.
Watch youtube tutorials. Here are some youtubers I think are pretty good art teaching all things art:
Have an inspiration folder/blog. Sometimes you just need a collection of starry nights or a misty forest or even a French bakery. All of those things can help you get inspired to draw. It could even be completely unrelated to what you plan to draw.
There are no dumb ideas in the creative process. If you want to draw a lizard in a dress go for it! If you want to draw various pastries with faces do it! Don’t let the thought of it being too dumb stop you because if I’ve learned anything in my several years of drawing it’s that an idea can lead to another and another and another and you may get a really good idea just from doodling dumb things.
Here’s a few things that can get you started on drawing better:
Most importantly, don’t give up! You may not immediately get notes or followers but it’s more important you get better than to have popularity. How do you think those popular artists got to where they are now? To be good you’ve got to work at it.
I’ve summarized professor
Alexander Arguelles’ video, because I think this is crucial for language learning.
There is no magic trick that will help you become fluent in 1 month, but there are very effective approaches to learning a new language and if you combine them, you will surely become fluent.
If you’re learning a new language, the most important thing you need to consider is
–
what type of language learner are you?
1. If you:
have a more deductive approach, which means that
you’re better at listening to and observing the language first and learning
through that, rather than starting with plain grammar points from a textbook
have a fair degree of intuition
like to observe a phenomenon
feel
somewhat comfortable with ambiguity
for a while, until things become clear
are someone who can feel comfortable being corrected when
they realize they were wrong, rather than getting confused and frustrated
because they went down an initial path that turned out not to be correct (so
you actually learn from being corrected and you don’t get confused by it)
have a desire to have
things explained to you beforehand in a nice and clear way
have a logical and analytical mind (which is usually the product of education in
general)
have a need for a systematic approach (basically if you’re
most comfortable with a book which is going to introduce the grammar according
to an agreed set of methods or an organized plan)
the most important part are the patterns of a language
no matter what type of language learner you are, I think it’s really clever to incorporate this method into you learning.
a language is actually made up of patterns which constantly repeat themselves and that is THE KEY TO FLUENCY
repeating the patterns over and over again, until they become natural, until you no longer have to conjugate the verbs in your head before speaking
when you become really good with patterns, your sentences will come out naturally, and patterns are what will get you to fluency
I’ve provided the links, where you will find a review of the books, so that you can have an idea of what they look like. You can find most of these on amazon.
There is also an amazing blog on here, which provides free books, and I think that you can find half of these series for free there. @lovelybluepanda
below is a piece written by esquire reporter and editor, shin ki joo, who was a regular on blue night radio for the entirety of jonghyun’s time spent on the show, for the march issue of the magazine. he also conducted the interview that jonghyun did for the may issue of esquire last year that was done after he stepped down as dj, which was his final magazine interview before his passing. (it can be read here.)
please take care in reading below as it’s very emotional and heavy and generally tough to get through. ONLY READ IT IF YOU FEEL READY TO. triggers: death tw, funerals tw, mental illness tw, suicide tw and a brief mention of burial / post-mortem and cremation. thank you to fantaemsie for translating.
there was no signature. tears formed in my eyes. tears flowed easily. musician kim jonghyun’s posthumous album, poet / artist, had no signature of jonghyun. every time a new album came out jonghyun gave it to me as a gift after putting a signature on it. was it may 2016, when the regular album, she is, came out he signed it like: “please listen to it well! it has a lot of exciting / hype songs!” when the 3rd anniversary album of mbc radio, blue night it’s jonghyun, came out he nagged like a grandfather: “health is the best!”
no matter how hard i searched there was no jonghyun signature. there was no jonghyun. jonghyun’s agency official told me this when they handed me the album that lost it’s owner: “it was a state where it’s an album that he finished working on already before leaving this world. it was made just a little bit. i’m delivering it only to the ones who were close to jonghyun.” it was when i gripped the album with no sign in my hands. sadness filled my heart. i was reduced to tears. it was the first tears that flowed after that day.
december 18th, 2017 was the day jonghyun left this world. towards the afternoon in some publishing house i received a call. it’s content was that jonghyun wished to publish a novel and wanted me to provide him with some connections. as much as he liked music, jonghyun liked writing. he published a novel called skeleton flower too. there was a time where he sent me a few short practice pieces. i read them and exchanged opinions. i told him i’ll contact the publisher’s side.
i didn’t. i was busy. i thought i should do it the next day. i wish i contacted him at once. if so, perhaps i wouldn’t have left jonghyun alone at that time. it was the first thought that came to me that day in the evening, hearing the news about jonghyun. it was the feeling of guilt. it turned out that a lot of jonghyun’s acquaintances had the same feelings. i should have contacted him that day. i should have met him usually more. i wish i had always came to have a conversation with him more. everyone was blaming themselves, who left jonghyun alone.
the next day, in front of tv cameras, i conveyed the news of the death of the popular idol group, shinee’s member, star musician, jonghyun. in front of the studio camera i pretended to be calm and composed. in fact, it was after dubbing a five minute vcr about jonghyun for some time that i crumbled. “when asked whether he was happy in last april’s esquire interview, jonghyun answered: ”i think i need to become happy now. i must become happy. i’m going to be happy.“ why couldn’t we listen more to his story? 28, he who was beautiful is no longer on our side.” i started shaking for the first time here. no matter how hard i tried i couldn’t stop crying. it was miserable. it was painful.
at night that day i went to jonghyun’s mourning house. together, with the pd and writers who spent three years together with jonghyun and blue night. without a world to say. everyone understood jonghyun’s mental suffering. nobody was able to fully comfort his suffering. i recalled hearing jonghyun usually say that the radio’s studio seemed like his house’s living room. even if i was invited to jonghyun’s living room i couldn’t notice his loneliness. it was a silent funeral hall.
watching the process of his body changing and disappearing into ashes was an agonizing thing. the cremation urn was as small as a baby basket. the way to the church where jonghyun will forever rest was far. unconsciously driving i listened to jonghyun’s music. normally, the song i enjoyed listening to was “end of a day”. somehow, i turned on “let me out”. “let me out” was the first song i listened to. the lyrics hit my heart. “i’m tired of the world, someone please embrace me. i’m drenched in tears. someone please wipe them away. please notice first, the me who’s struggling. acknowledge the poor me. please help me.”
it was then. all of a sudden the memory i had forgotten came to me. as soon as i came back home after jonghyun’s funeral ended i searched, starting from kakaotalk. i came across the kakaotalk i interacted with jonghyun in on the 24th of april, 2017. it was the release day of the album containing “let me out”. it was a few weeks after the 2nd of april, blue night’s last broadcast, where he left. i told jonghyun: “i’m listening to this album too. it’s warm.” jonghyun said, “thank you. please be sure to listen to “let me out”.“
after that day, too, my kakaotalk with jonghyun continued from time-to-time. the whole year was wasted on words of ”let’s eat together one day“. it was a relationship where we saw each other every week for three years. we may have been slowly moving away from each other like any ordinary human relationship in society.
in the end, after finishing jonghyun’s funeral, when i got home, then, i listened to ”let me out“. i know jonghyun gave me as his life sunbae hyung friend and as his coworker undeservedly so much affection. i couldn’t give back as much as i had received from jonghyun. noticed. in fact that now i forever can’t hug, know nor help jonghyun. that’s why it’s a fact that i can’t let go of jonghyun. that night, tears too wouldn’t come out. even tears wouldn’t come out.
After that we will post every video sent from you and let you vote which one was the best. May the best person win. Good luck to you all!

I have $24 to last me til Friday, what should I buy with it?
a pallet of ramen noodles
I hate ramen noodles tho
hmmmmm
bees?
Are you suggesting that I eat bees for a week
This is roughly what I make sure I have in my kitchen all the time along with rough estimates of local prices (MN). I buy a lot of things when they’re on sale and stockpile them.
instant oatmeal packets with fruit in them - $3 probably and this can be breakfast all week and maybe even a lunch or dinner too since you usually get 10 packets
bag of rice - $2-3 depending on size. 1 cup dry rice makes enough for about two meals depending on what you add in. if you get cheap rice, rinse it before cooking
canned beans - usually under $1 per can - mix the can with your rice and you have a meal. chili-spiced beans will make bean tacos. Rinse non-spiced beans before adding to anything.
Tortilla - usually around $3 but you get like 8-10 of them. Tacos, wraps, and quesadillas are all fair game here
lettuce - $2 max around here, either a head of something or bagged precut depending on preference, use as a salad or on tacos
protein other than beans of some sort - probably $5-7 for meat, $2-3 for eggs. sometimes I can get bags of frozen chicken breasts in this price range and each is usually 2 meals if I add in a bunch of veggies. fry/scramble eggs and add to any of the options.
your favorite stir fry sauce - $3ish
vegetables - $5ish. literally anything that you can 1. fry in a pan and 2. you’ll eat. fresh carrots are usually pretty cheap. get frozen if it’s cheaper and you’re strapped for cash/prep time on this part.
alternative to stir fry: pasta (~$2), fresh tomatoes (~$2), cheese (~$3).
cheese and fruit if you have extra - look if your store has loyalty cards for free that you can load coupons on for cheese there’s always one it seems like.
ahh thank you!!!
Reblogging because there’s never knowing who’ll need it.
Adding also: the single most nutritious food on earth is potatoes in their peel. Potatoes + some milk and butter = everything you need. They don’t last all that long, but they’re fairly cheap and the quickest cheat to “How do I not fuck my body up.”
(Cooked potatoes’ll last a while in the fridge. Potatoes nearing the end of their useful lives? Cook them to half-done first, figure out what to do with them later.)
Easiest baked potatoes: slice thinly but not paper-like, spread like cards, brush with oil (a silicone baking brush is totes worth the little it costs), spread salt and pepper (a little less than you think you’d like), cover with foil, stick in oven or toaster-oven at 150C for 40min. (If you have the patience, at that point click up to 180C, remove the cover and add 10-20min.) Reheats well, lasts in the fridge longer than it’ll take you to nom.
Dead-Animal-Free Whole Protein: some legumes + some grain. AKA rice and lentils, or rice and beans. (Maybe some fried onion for flavor; onion’s cheap and stays good a descent while. Fried onion makes everything taste better and keeps forever in the freezer, so frying up a bunch and keeping portions is not a half-bad idea.) (If going for the beans option - lentils are cheaper around here but fuck if I know what it’s like in your area - dump some tomato sauce and oil in; canola or soy are best health-wise, and far cheaper than olive; avoid corn.) Oh, what does instant couscous go for in your area? It keeps for fucking ever, it’s usually cheap, and it takes well to any and all added taste.
If you get to choose, black lentils taste the best and need the least soak-time (0-20min), green lentils are best for cooked stuff and red lentils are best in soups. (Red lentils + potatoes + root vegetables of choice + spices; cut into small pieces, cook, run through the blender if you wanna [stick blender’s awesome], freeze in portions.)
When possible, get instant soup mix. Get the good instant soup mix. (The kind that’s not made primarily of sugar, yeast or both. The rest is optional.) Dump 1/2tsp (or more, but start on the low end) into couscous, or chicken, or sprinkle over potatoes being stuck in the oven. Whatever. It’ll make most cooked-food-type things taste better. And again, lasts forever on the shelf.
If you can have eggs (goodness knows they’re sometimes expensive), dump some tomato sauce in a pan (tomato sauce lasts forever on the shelf), add some oil, onion/beans to cook in it, hot peppers if you wanna, then when it’s nearly ready crack an egg or two in. Hard-boiled eggs last a remarkably while in the fridge, so when eggs reach near the end of their usable lives, just hard-boil and stick in the fridge.
(Have eggs as often as you can, particularly as you have brain-shit going on. You need all the eggs, salt, and 60%-or-more chocolate you can get. Brains are made of cholesterol and salt, so folks with neuro or other brain shit need more of both. Potassium is also aces. You know what has the most potassium? Tomato paste.)
Grated cheese keeps in the freezer for ever. Grated cheese will make a lot of things taste nicer. Preserved lemon juice keeps forever in the fridge. Grated cheese + oil + lemon = instant and awesome pasta sauce that’ll liven up the weeks-old dry pasta in the fridge.
Slices bread also keeps well in the freezer. Try to have half a loaf or a loaf. Dry bread gets cut in cubes, mixed with oil and the aforementioned instant soup, stuck in oven at lowest until properly dry, then kept in an airtight jar to add to soups.
(Over-ripe tomatoes come cheaper. They get turned into soup or sauce, then frozen in portions.)
this is a very good post but why are we glossing over the fact that the alternative to ramen is bees
i have it on pretty good authority that bees are not an affordable eating alternative to ramen.
Seriously, bees are expensive
Trufax.
And speaking as someone who is also living off oatmeal, beans, and brown rice, if you need recipes, I have them!
Today I made 16 bean soup with chicken sausage and it was crazy good and I got 8 servings out of the one batch (froze half). I usually get the cheapest beans I can find, and GOYA bags of beans are usually $1-2. I soaked them overnight, rinsed them, and threw them in a gallon lidded saucepan with 2 boxes of chicken stock (also on sale for $2), two bay leaves, sauteed green pepper, onion, and celery, some garlic from a jar, about two tablespoons of dried herbs de provence, and the “fancy” bit was adding $6 bourbon and apple chicken sausages. You can actually sub veg stock for chicken and skip the sausage and make it vegan and it would still taste great.
Oh and I’ve been doing steel-cut oats. I don’t buy the name brand ones, I just pick whatever store brand/generic I can get for less than $4. They take about ½ an hour to make, but they’re super tasty and I make 2 cups
of dried oats at a time
with dried cranberries and that’s breakfast for 4 days at least.
I’ve also been making black bean soup, red beans and rice, and curried potatoes and chick peas. I got 100 quart and pint take-away containers from Amazon for $20 and they all stack neatly and are perf for one serving of whatever.
Additionally, depending on where you live, whole rotisserie chickens are something like $4-$7 and are easily 4 - 6 servings of protein and on TOP of that, if you stick the carcass in a ziplock bag and then the freezer you have excellent soup makings. Using bones in soup literally squeezes all viable vitamins and minerals out of the suckers. Soup made from lots of bones is great to keep around if you get sick, it’ll feed and sooth you relatively easily and as you get better you can add noodles. ON TOP OF THAT, a quarter to a half cup of soup broth added to a lot of dishes also adds those nutrients PLUS flavor.
